Is food contaminated with viruses and bacteria?
The health crisis caused by the SARS - COV - 2 virus left us with new health measures that most of us have adopted as part of the new normality. Some of them include the sanitization of shoes upon arrival at home, the use of antibacterial gel when entering an establishment, the use of disinfectant when buying a product, among many others.
However, all these precautions are largely due to the fact that we have been more aware of the bacteria and viruses that surround us on a daily basis, derived from the high levels of pollution and climate change caused by the most polluting industries in the world, such as fossil fuels or meat production.
Without a doubt, something that we must consider is the bacteria that food contains. A custom that we all undoubtedly have since before the times of COVID-19, is the disinfection of vegetables and their correct washing.
But, are vegetables really the foods with the highest number of bacteria?
No, although it is true that a bad washing of vegetables can lead to stomach upsets, they are not the most risky compared to the viruses and bacteria that contain animal proteins.
Foodborne illnesses caused by bacteria, parasites, chemical toxins, are more common in meat, poultry and seafood compared to plant foods.
The main microorganisms that enter raw meat are: Toxoplasma Gondii and bacteria such as E.coli, Vibrio Cholerae, Listeria Monocytogenes, salmonella, campylobacter, clostridium and yersinia
It is believed that with correct cooking, these microorganisms are completely eliminated, although this does not really guarantee the correct disinfection of the meat, and gastrointestinal diseases are becoming more common, even with a "correct" cooking process.
The contamination of the meat occurs mainly when the animals are slaughtered in spaces where the visors and waste come into contact with the meat that is for commercial sale, in addition, the substances produced by the animals due to adrenaline and fear caused in these places, also affects the sanitary quality of the final consumer product.
Also, another side effect, which can undoubtedly harm our health, is resistance to antibiotics, since animals are exposed to large doses of hormones and chemicals in order to promote accelerated growth, which are injected with drugs to prevent diseases that affect all livestock production. As a result, this ends up affecting human health, since being frequent consumers of products full of antibiotics, the body recognizes and adapts to these doses, finally, this causes that when we need an antibiotic, greater resistance is present in our body, thus preventing it from fulfilling its purpose.
There are multiple disadvantages of meat consumption and it is worth mentioning that it also feeds one of the cruelest and most polluting industries both on the planet and on the human body.
Take care of yourself and your family by consuming healthy products and with strict sanitation processes such as Asanté, who, concerned about health, make our products with high quality and sanitation standards, bringing together the best of vegetable proteins such as nopal, peas, amaranth and soy.
