Plant-based diets lower the risk of death from disease

A new study conducted by Harvard doctors and published in the JAMA Internal Medicine journal has shown that plant-based diets are associated with favorable eating habits in reducing the risk of premature death by disease.

For this study, data collected over 36 years from 75,230 women participating in the Nurses' Health Study and 44,085 men in the Health Professionals Follow-up Study were used, with a total sample of approximately 119,315 subjects. At the start of the study, the participants did not have cardiovascular disease or cancer. Every four years, they ran routine and diet tests and questions of daily habits were asked to the participants.

Evaluating the results, they concluded that those who ate a diet high in plants, specifically whole grains, fruits, vegetables, nuts, and legumes, were associated with a lower risk of premature death from different causes, such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, and respiratory diseases mainly.

On the other hand, a study published in the American Journal of Lifestyle Medicine determined that starting a plant-based diet later in life is also beneficial. Elderly adults who consume more than five pills or medications a day increase lethal drug damage by 88%, however, a plant-based diet can help reduce the amount of medication needed per day, increasing the hope of life and reducing the risk of drug fatalities.

More and more benefits of plant-based diets are being verified, this time, benefits for the health of the human being, in addition to everything that contributes to the conservation of the environment. And there are more and more plant-based options on the market, such as ASANTÉ, traditional Mexican dishes based on national plants such as amaranth, pea and nopal.
