Plant-Based Diets: The Ancient Eastern Remedy for Menopause
During menopause, many women frequently experience hot flashes, which are a feeling of suffocation and intense heat in the chest, neck and face. This causes the interruption of their daily activities and influence her mood
An anthropological study from the 1980s found that menopausal symptoms in women from Japan and other Asian countries manifested on a smaller scale than in Western women. Cultures in which, for centuries, low-fat, plant-based, grain, soy, and vegetable-based daily meals have abounded.
Based on this observation, the North American Menopause Society conducted and published a study, in which the effects of plant-based and reduced-fat diets were observed in women with menopause at different stages.
The results showed an 85% decrease in hot flashes in the participants, from experiencing a daily average of five, to only one or none per day.
Participants also reported improvements in their mood, sleep cycle, and energy performance. Some also had improvements in their digestion and showed weight loss; more than 6.5lb in 12 weeks without making changes in their regular physical activity.
Plant-based diets are an alternative to Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT), both for those who have suffered from its side effects, and for those who do not have access to them or prefer to try other alternatives first to reduce symptoms.
While menopause implies a transition in a woman's life cycle, which can be difficult for some, the transition to a plant-based diet doesn't have to be!
